Desperate Need for a Region or Global Unit of Account

• Countries outside the dollar or euro areas do not have a coherent unit of account.

• The best solution, as I argued last year here, was a global unit of account created by the IMF.

• While that is a possibility, leaders in the dollar and euro area, are not supportive.

• For that reason a regional solution may be needed for countries in the Middle East and Africa.
